We took charge of PIZZERIA FUMO which opened in Komazawa on December , 2003.
For placing tables in the terrace and in the shop, we designed FUMO OUTDOOR and FUMO INDOOR. The keyword for FUMO OUTDOOR is “seamless”, so we worked hard on not showing the joint of the legs and acrylic board. This task seemed to be easy but it turned out that we need to weld the center bottom of the leg and the structure of the legs going through the acrylic board is impossible. Instead of that we had to insert a different parts to it. The craftsperson worked really hard even though task that the designers gave were unreasonable demands. We haven’t seen such a hot soul from the craftsperson recently so we were moved. It didn’t quite go the way we had conceived it, but its light forme exists in the small space as if it is making another atmosphere.
We got a hint from amber with a bee inside when we designed FUMOINDOOR. It existed from few thousand years ago but it also has an inconsistency of futuristic. So we rearrange this to “something with enough size but looks small”, “transparency and gentleness of the wood” and inserted a 0.2 mm sheet of Sen wood to 30 mm acrylic board to show the advanced technique.
